Levi Hastings, an alumnus from the MSU Graphic Design program, was recently named Illustrator of the Day by theartfuls.com website. Levi is currently working and residing in Seattle.

Dana Tanamachi, Visiting Artist



























































Many thanks and gratitude go out to Dana Tanamachi for her visit October 18-21. Dana, a custom chalk letterer and graphic designer living in Brooklyn, NY, made the journey west to meet with our students and share her amazing work. Before becoming a full-time chalk artist, Dana was a designer at SpotCo and Louise Fili, Inc. in NYC. Dana recently was recognized as one of the NY Art Director Club's Young Guns for 2011.

National Student Advertising Competition Honors

























Congratulations go to Mike Gold's Marketing Class which took 2nd place at the National Student Advertising Competition in Boise, ID. Graphic Design students spend two semesters working collaboratively with Marketing students in this year-long course at MSU. This year, the corporate sponsor was JCPenney and the students focused on helping JCPenney reach a younger, broader target market.

Blaine Halvorson of Junk Food















Notorious artist and respected entrepreneur Blaine Halvorson returned to his old stomping grounds in the School of Art at MSU to meet up with students in Stephanie Newman’s new class called GDSN 376 Screenprinting. Giving students insider tips and artistic insights Blaine shared his knowledge of how to use modern screenprinting as a powerful graphic medium. Blaine is one of the original founders of the Los Angeles based company Junk Food, which produces licensed t-shirts for massive franchises like the NFL, NBA and NASCAR, as well as for musical legends like AC/DC, KISS, Jimi Hendrix, Motley Crew, Pink Floyd, Run DMC, The Who, Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Senior Wins Internship with Time Warner















Graphic design senior Whit Connolly recently placed in the top 5 of the Student Design Competition sponsored by The Society of Publication Designers (SPD) in New York City. Whit received a prestigious honorable mention in this national contest or her humorous 4-page layout depicting how to properly make and use finger puppets. For this honor she will receive a summer internship with Time Warner publishing company’s People Magazine in Manhattan beginning in June along with complementary housing supplied by Time Warner. Whit, who is from Ennis, joins a string of Montana State University seniors who have dominated this national competition for the past 5 years. In 2008, SPD winner Paul Johnson received an internship at National Geographic Adventurer and in 2007 another MSU graduate Allison Mclean was awarded an internship at Marie Claire magazine, part of the Hearst Corporation. Congratulations!

Montana Student ADDY Awards















In their third year to enter work in the Montana Addy Awards, MSU Graphic Design students received 8 Gold Addy awards, 20 Silver Addy awards 4 Bronze Addy awards and one Best in Show. Graphic Design professors Jeffrey Conger and Jason Johnson made the road trip to Great Falls with several seniors to receive the student accolades and visit with alumni at the award ceremony. All of the student winners are forwarded to the American Advertising Federation District Xl Student Addy competition in Boise, Idaho, where their work competes with students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

Screenprinting Workshop with Ben Barry of Facebook


MSU Graphic Design students and Studio Graduate students came in on a holiday morning to learn screenprinting tips from Ben Barry, communication designer at Facebook. Students worked on four different 2-color poster concepts provided by Barry. Barry will also be giving a lecture entitled: "Move Fast & Break Things" on Tuesday, February 22 at 7:30 pm in Reynolds Recital Hall. The lecture will be free and open to the public.
