Many thanks and gratitude go out to Dana Tanamachi for her visit October 18-21. Dana, a custom chalk letterer and graphic designer living in Brooklyn, NY, made the journey west to meet with our students and share her amazing work. Before becoming a full-time chalk artist, Dana was a designer at SpotCo and Louise Fili, Inc. in NYC. Dana recently was recognized as one of the NY Art Director Club's Young Guns for 2011.

National Student Advertising Competition Honors

Congratulations go to Mike Gold's Marketing Class which took 2nd place at the National Student Advertising Competition in Boise, ID. Graphic Design students spend two semesters working collaboratively with Marketing students in this year-long course at MSU. This year, the corporate sponsor was JCPenney and the students focused on helping JCPenney reach a younger, broader target market.

Blaine Halvorson of Junk Food

Notorious artist and respected entrepreneur Blaine Halvorson returned to his old stomping grounds in the School of Art at MSU to meet up with students in Stephanie Newman’s new class called GDSN 376 Screenprinting. Giving students insider tips and artistic insights Blaine shared his knowledge of how to use modern screenprinting as a powerful graphic medium. Blaine is one of the original founders of the Los Angeles based company Junk Food, which produces licensed t-shirts for massive franchises like the NFL, NBA and NASCAR, as well as for musical legends like AC/DC, KISS, Jimi Hendrix, Motley Crew, Pink Floyd, Run DMC, The Who, Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Senior Wins Internship with Time Warner

Graphic design senior Whit Connolly recently placed in the top 5 of the Student Design Competition sponsored by The Society of Publication Designers (SPD) in New York City. Whit received a prestigious honorable mention in this national contest or her humorous 4-page layout depicting how to properly make and use finger puppets. For this honor she will receive a summer internship with Time Warner publishing company’s People Magazine in Manhattan beginning in June along with complementary housing supplied by Time Warner. Whit, who is from Ennis, joins a string of Montana State University seniors who have dominated this national competition for the past 5 years. In 2008, SPD winner Paul Johnson received an internship at National Geographic Adventurer and in 2007 another MSU graduate Allison Mclean was awarded an internship at Marie Claire magazine, part of the Hearst Corporation. Congratulations!

In their third year to enter work in the Montana Addy Awards, MSU Graphic Design students received 8 Gold Addy awards, 20 Silver Addy awards 4 Bronze Addy awards and one Best in Show. Graphic Design professors Jeffrey Conger and Jason Johnson made the road trip to Great Falls with several seniors to receive the student accolades and visit with alumni at the award ceremony. All of the student winners are forwarded to the American Advertising Federation District Xl Student Addy competition in Boise, Idaho, where their work competes with students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

Screenprinting Workshop with Ben Barry of Facebook

MSU Graphic Design students and Studio Graduate students came in on a holiday morning to learn screenprinting tips from Ben Barry, communication designer at Facebook. Students worked on four different 2-color poster concepts provided by Barry. Barry will also be giving a lecture entitled: "Move Fast & Break Things" on Tuesday, February 22 at 7:30 pm in Reynolds Recital Hall. The lecture will be free and open to the public.

CMYK Magazine, Top 100 Creatives Issue

Congratulations go to Bobby Biskupiak, who participated in Thesis during Spring 2010, and has had his Thesis project acknowledged in CMYK Magazine's Top 100 Creatives, issue #49.

His project for Bunk, "a boutique hostel that he created just for Thesis, included naming and the creation of an identity system."

His work was chosen by the design judge for this issue: Connie Hwang, Principal, Connie Hwang Design (San Francisco, CA).

Graphic Design Thesis Show 2010

Concepts for the Thesis Show poster and postcards were produced by Sophomores and voted on by the Seniors. The winner, above, was designed by Shay Lee.

The 2010 Graphic Design Thesis Show will be open Tuesday, April 27th and be up through Friday, May 7th. All 37 seniors will be displaying their capstone projects, everything from high-end corporate branding, infographics and snowboard/skateboard design to entrepreneurial business launches. Come to the closing reception Friday, May 7th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Copeland Gallery located on the second floor of the School of Art. The gallery is open from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. MSU Graphic Design students honorably represented our program by bringing home 6 Gold ADDY® Awards and 13 Silver ADDY® Awards from the district competition held in Boise, Idaho last week. One student, Cheyenne Osmundsen, captured the Best in Show Award for her logo concept for the XL Country Radio station, based here in Bozeman. The Northwest ADDY® Awards Competition is the district or middle level of a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). The Northwest ADDY® Awards Competition is administered by AAF-District XI. Students from the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington or the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia or Alberta are in the competition together.

American Design Awards - Gold Medal Winners!

Congratulations to Rafe Stewart, Senior in the Graphic Design Program, for winning a Gold Medal for his portfolio website design in the American Design Awards Monthly Design Competition for November 2009. Rafe's work went up against 485 other entries and was one of 13 gold medals awarded. Rafe, who is from Miles City, Montana, shares this honor with designers from Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Canada and Germany. To see Rafe's website, click here.

In June, Meta Newhouse, Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, also won a Gold Medal for her website. Meta's work went up against 674 other entries and was one of 12 gold medals awarded. New MSU President Waded Cruzado has continued a long-standing tradition of commissioning a custom designed note card to be designed by one of the MSU Graphic Design Program Seniors. At the end of 2009, Caitlin Field took first place with her image of Montana Hall which takes inspiration from early 19th Century Great Northern Railroad posters. Caitlin was awarded the top prize of $500. Other winners included Patrick Broom (2nd place - $300) and Tess Arvesen (3rd place - $200.) Congratulations to Caitlin, Patrick and Tess!

President's Holiday Card.

Each year, President Geoff Gamble and his wife Patricia send out a custom designed holiday card designed by one of the MSU Graphic Design Program Seniors. At the end of 2009, Jeremy Sandlin took first place with his nostalgic image of Montana Hall in a vignetted snowy setting. Not only was the card printed and sent out to over 2000 recipients nationwide, but Jeremy also took home the top prize of $500. Other winners included Charity Martin (2nd place - $300) and Sarah Buzzetti (3rd place - $200.) Congratulations to Jeremy, Charity and Sarah!

NASHVILLE’S LEGENDARY POSTER SHOP: HATCH SHOW PRINT

The Helen E. Copeland Gallery is excited to announce a month-long exhibition of letterpress posters from the legendary Hatch Show Print. Truly an American treasure, the print shop is located literally around the corner from the original Grand Ole Opry building in Nashville, Tennessee. This working letterpress and design shop has been in operation since 1879 producing promotional posters for recording artists and advertisers alike. On display are 40 color prints including those for concerts by music legends such as Johnny Cash, Dolly Patron, Hank Williams and Elvis Presley as well as more contemporary artists like Frank Black. The exhibition also displays several samples of classic advertising posters created for county fairs and 50’s travel trailers, which incorporate large woodblock printing techniques. Sponsored by the Graphic Design program in the MSU School of Art, the exhibition will run from January 11 to February 12, 2010. There will be an evening reception open to the public on Thursday, January 21st from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The Helen E. Copeland Gallery is located on the second floor of Haynes Hall at Montana State University. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Portland Senior Field Trip

This year 34 Graphic Design seniors along with our four faculty Stephanie, Jeffrey, Meta and Nathan made the pilgrimage to Portland, Oregon for the annual field trip. Perhaps the most successful trip ever! MSU graphic design alumni rolled out the red carpet with Emily Cellan giving a VIP tour at Nike and Annie Regnier at the ever-popular Columbia Sportswear. Then on Wednesday evening Mary Kysar at Makelike hosted an exceptional reception in their new studio. Thanks again to all the alumni who came to meet us and talk with the seniors! All of them truly enjoyed meeting you.

Other memorable tours included visiting Trevor Graves at Nemo, Gary Houston at Voodoo Catbox, Char Bjorklund and Lucy Nobles at Adidas and with special visit to the Ace Hotel by poster artist Dan Stiles. This year several new stops were included to the Portland itinerary including Ziba, Leopold Ketel and Opolis Design. Of course it couldn’t be a trip to PDX without visits to Powell’s Books, Mississippi Records, Voodoo Doughnuts, the Portland Art Museum for the China exhibit and the Portland Zoo to see the cheetahs and giraffes. So you can expect a repeat visit next year to Stumptown, before we start dreaming of studio tours in Denver, Minneapolis or San Francisco.

Good 50x70 Workshop!

Tommaso Minnetti and Pasquale Volpe held their Good 50x70 Poster Workshop on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 with 30 MSU students at the School of Art. Blitzing through concepts and finished comps in two days, this group worked together to produce poster ideas to help raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Students worked up ideas on paper and presented loose concepts to Tommaso and Pasquale before moving into the production phases of their posters.

The Good 50x70 Social Communication Project is coming to MSU! The School of Art is sponsoring this amazing international poster exhibition that features work from over 36 different countries and 210 different artists/designers. Meta Newhouse, Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, has a poster in this exhibition. Come out and see it (on the Mall, in the center of Campus) between September 25 – October 8.

Also, there will be a Symposium featuring Tommaso Minnetti and Pasquale Volpe from Good 50x70. They will speak about forming Good, and where they plan to take the organization in the future. It will be held at The Ellen Theatre on Tuesday, September 29 from 5:30-8pm with a reception afterward. They have come all the way from Milan to share their story, so please try to make it.

Only a few months after graduation and the class of 2009 is already making its mark in the profession of graphic design. Here in Bozeman, Ben Fjare has launched his own design business, with several web clients keeping him busy — he is spending more time tossing around ones and zeros than enjoying the summer on his bright yellow sportbike. Other MSU design grads, Skye Saylor and Thomas Marnin, have already packed their bags, said goodbye to all their Bozeman friends and headed off to Seattle. With a sewing machine in hand and notebooks full of ideas, they are planning to launch a product-based company called Regular Bear. They (along with business partner and long-time cohort Thane Lund, Studio '09) are currently working on a top secret project for Kid Robot. Finally, it is probably no shock to most of you to hear that after a very long interview process at K2 Sports, our very own Drew Pigott was selected from over 700 applicants for the new Junior Graphic Designer position on the ski-side of K2. Looks like Drew will be starting his new job on August 31. Please keep us posted on other great developments for the class of 2009 — and we want to hear from the rest of you as well.

Graphic Design alumni Eli Clark and his wife Jen have hit the open road in their Airstream Bambi trailer. Building on connections they made while in Carlsbad, California that include Adidas, TaylorMade, Burton, O'Neill Wetsuits, Rip Curl and Von Zipper…they are now traveling cross country while working remotely for various freelance clients. Enjoying the gypsy lifestyle living in a 19-foot long live/work space the big adventure has begun.

A showcase of student poster and artwork entries to the PRISM (Preventing and Reducing the Incidence of Suicide in Montana) campaign contest was held Wednesday, April 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in SUB room 233. MSU Graphic Design students Chelsea McKenna, a senior, took first place (and a $1000 cash prize) and Machi Block, a junior, took third place (and a $300 cash prize). MSU, University of Montana-Western in Dillon, and the Montana Mental Health Association organized the poster contest. Opening Reception Big Hit!

Literally hundreds of guests showed up for the opening reception of the 2009 Graphic Design Thesis Show. With the Copeland Gallery teeming with patrons, proud graduates showed their artwork to friends and family. Gallery Director Erin Anderson exclaimed, “There are so many people here it’s hard to see the artwork.” Way to go seniors! If you missed the show, a special one-day-only exhibit of the seniors work will be displayed downtown at a Main Street venue on Friday May 8th for those in Bozeman for graduation. 2009 Graphic Design Thesis Show

The wait is finally over! The 2009 Graphic Design Thesis Show will be open Monday April 13th and be up for two weeks until Friday May 1st. All 32 graduating seniors will be displaying their capstone projects, from high-end corporate branding to wild-n-crazy motorcycle graphics there is something for everyone. Come to the artist reception Tuesday April 14th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Copeland Gallery located on the second floor of the School of Art. The gallery is open from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. Students Win Gold & Silver Addys!

In their first attempt at entering designs in the 2008 Montana Addy Awards, MSU Graphic Design students swept five categories receiving 3 Gold Addy awards and 13 Silver Addy awards. Graphic Design Professor Stephanie Newman made the road trip to Great Falls to receive the student accolades and visit with alumni at the award ceremony. All of the student winners will be forwarded to the American Advertising Federation District Xl Student Addy competition held this April in Spokane, Washington.

Skye, a senior in the Graphic Design Program designed this header with characters she is working with on a current project. She included a reference to Harry Langohr's header with the "Go Cats" voice balloon. The character on the right has jumped off the typography right out of the frame. Perhaps out of joy regarding the upcoming graduation?

Lynsey Dyer, Back from Japan.

Lynsey Dyer, an unbelievably talented skier/illustrator AND MSU Graphic Design alumna is recently back from Japan!
(Above) is one of her illustrations inspired by the journey, as well as a few photos (below) from the trip.

Her travel group consisted of two athletes, a writer, cinematographer and photographer. The results of the trip will be published in the Red Bulletin in Austria and Germany.

Warren Miller (world-famous skiing and snowboarding filmmaker) is checking out the footage for a segment now and the Ski Channel will also be reediting the 8 hours of tape into a 22 minute television piece for their millions of viewers.

Lynsey is now off to Alaska for more skiing and illustration adventures!

Chelsea McKenna, a graphic design Senior, was chosen as one of this year's MSU Women's Center's "Students of Achievement".

The Women's Center and the Alumni Association will honor the "Student of Achievement" Awardees at a reception later this month. Recipients are all students who promote diversity and equality, demonstrate leadership abilities, excel in their school work, and serve as strong role models for their peers.

Congratulations Chelsea! We are all really proud of you and what you have accomplished here at MSU.

XL Country Logo Competition.

Students in Art 366 Intermediate Graphic Design participated in a logo competition to rebrand XL Country radio station. Congratulations go to (work pictured from the top, left to right) Fletcher Eidum, Brandon Warner, Bobby Biskupiak, Tasheena Fogle, Brandon Butler and Cheyenne Osmundsen. Their work will be posted on the XL Country Club website next week, where XL Country Club members will get the chance to vote on the logo they feel best suits their favorite radio station.
